Intermediate Level 1
Lesson 3
Step 2: Let's take a look at a problem that needs solving
Hey there engineer! I need some help. I've been trying to move an object out of the way of my walking path, but I'm not strong enough! Could you help me?
Can you design a robot to help our friend Robbie?
Let's use the Engineering Design Process to find a solution for Robbie!

Phase 1: Define the Problem
We know Robbie needs help moving an object, but we need some more information. What does the object look like? How big is it? Where is it?
Sorry about that engineer! I'm trying move a cube out of the way on path I like to walk on. Here is a picture of the cube and the path.

The cube is 6.5 cm wide, 5 cm long, and 6.5 cm tall.
6.5 cm

Start
Box
Define the problem in your own words and write it into your engineering notebook
Finish
Robbie usually walks from the start to the finish, but needs your help to move the box out of the way!
Phase 2: Plan Solutions
When an engineer thinks about solutions, they do something called brainstorming.
Using the robot base you built at the start of this lesson, think about what you can add onto it that will help clear the obstacle for Robbie.
While you brainstorm, write down and draw your ideas into your engineering notebook!
Phase 3: Make a Model
1.
Build this design onto your already built chassis
2.
3.
Look through your designs and pick the one that you think will work the best!
Program your robot to move forward and clear the obstacle out of the way!

3.
The code used in Scratch is almost the same as what is used on the robot! Click here for some helpful information about VEX IQ Blocks Programming.
The Engineering Design Process doesn't stop there! Move on to the next lesson to learn about testing.
