Advanced  Challenge

Competitive Challenge

As a cumulative challenge that encompasses all the material you have learned in the Advanced section, as well as through the Beginner and Intermediate sections, it is time to put all of the skills you have learned to the test! If you want to review some more before starting this challenge, click the button below.

Challenge Arena

This challenge is very similar conceptually to a previous VEX Robotics Competition, as seen below. Many of the tasks involved in the competitive challenge you are completing, have also been completed by teams registered for official VEX IQ competitions. This challenge will be a great test of how well your Robotics Engineering Team would do in an official competitive competition!

For this challenge, the playing field will be a square that is 2m (6.56ft) wide and 2m (6.56ft) long. There are two goals: one on the midline of the left field edge and one on the midline of the right field edge, that the robot must place the rectangular objects onto.

Some Helpful Information!

The robots will start in the center of the bottom and top edges of the field. Three VEX cubes are placed in each corner of the field, one of each color (red, green, and blue) at the start. Both robots will have a 15-second automation period, followed by a 1-minute and 45-second remote control period in this competition. In both of these periods, the goal is for the robot to pick up as many of the VEX cubes and place them onto the VEX controller box within the allotted time. Check out our example solution in the video on the left!

Competition Logistics

Competition matches will be one versus one, with one robot starting on the top edge and another on the bottom edge.

Create your student team with 3-4 people. Your team must create a robot that can not only complete the tasks of this competition, but complete them faster than the other teams!

The student team that scores the most points in a round will advance to the next round, where they compete with another student team in the class.

When designing your robot, don't forget these Design Constraints

Your robot must be able to pinch and lift an object!

In the automated section, your robot must use any sensor to locate the object.

Score Guidelines:

VEX cube scored in autonomous period: 2 points

VEX cube scored in driver-controlled period: 1 point

Game Materials

  • 12-VEX cubes

  • VEX controller box
